Being the good little consumer whore I am, I picked up Windows Vista on launch day. I didn't install it right away because I wanted backup some files from my Windows XP install since I was replacing that hard drive completely but now I've been running Vista for long enough to get a good feel for it.
Not much has changed between XP and Vista but the most notable change is the new glass like interface. I gotta say I'm really loving the new look which is a massive improvement from XP's "Fisher Price" default theme. I've been running custom styles on XP for a long time but I'm still impressed with this new Aero style with it's use of transparency.
The screenshot to the left displays some of the power of Vista. This interface appears when you use the Windows key and tab to cycle through applications. Basically it's a replacement to Alt-Tab which displays all of your applications in realtime. In this screenshot I'm watching HDTV in SageTV in fullscreen mode, playing World of Warcraft in fullscreen mode and have a Firefox window open. I'm able to get full fps in both my game of WoW and SageTV. It's pretty impressive the potential Vista has in terms of multimedia capabilities. But also something to note is my cpu and memory usage in the top right corner of the screenshot. I had my dual core 4800+ maxed out on both cores and also 2 gigs of ram filled. It kinda makes me want to throw another 2 gigs in to see if there's an improvement.
Oh and don't worry, Alt-Tab still works but it's much prettier now. In fact it's a lot like OSX's application switching interface. I do like the use of the glass effect and also all of the applications are displayed in realtime. In the screenshot below SageTV was playing at full speed.

The new sidebar widgets are decent but there's not many useful widgets available and the one's that are available are pretty buggy. The widgets I've found most useful and stable can be seen in the first screenshot; weather in the top left corner, cpu and memory info in the top right, an application launcher bar in the bottom left and a recycling bin widget in the bottom right.
So Vista all in all has treated me well so far. I do have an issue on my laptop with my wireless card not having 64 bit drivers. I'm just hoping Intel gets their shit together fast.
